Pretty Links - Redirects and Vanity URLs
Setting Up Redirects and Vanity URLs with Pretty Links
This article will guide you on how to use the Pretty Links WordPress plugin to create simple redirects and memorable, custom links (often called vanity URLs). This is useful for tracking clicks, creating clean links for marketing materials, or shortening long URLs.
1. Accessing Pretty Links
- Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
- Navigate to Pretty Links in the main left-hand sidebar.
- Click Add New to create a new redirect.
2. Creating a Redirect or Vanity URL
The process of creating a simple redirect is the same as creating a vanity URL. You define the short, memorable link and tell the system where it should send the visitor.
A. Defining the Target
In the "Target URL" field, paste the full destination URL where you want visitors to ultimately land.
- Example: If you want the link to send users to your Contact Us page, paste the full URL:
https://yourdomain.com/contact-us
B. Choosing the Redirection Type
Under "Redirection Type," choose one of the following options:
- 307 (Temporary): Use this for links you might change frequently (e.g., a current sale or seasonal promotion). This tells search engines that the move is temporary.
- 301 (Permanent): Use this for links that will never change (e.g., redirecting an old page to a new page). This tells search engines that the move is permanent, which is generally better for SEO.
- Pretty Bar: Use this if you want the original destination URL to load within a toolbar displaying your website's header/branding. (Less common for simple redirects).
C. Creating the Pretty Link (Vanity URL)
In the "Pretty Link" box, you will define the short, memorable URL.
- Pretty Links uses your website's main domain. You only need to specify the path that comes after the domain.
- Example: If you want the link to be
https://yourdomain.com/ebook, you would just enterebookin this box.
D. Naming the Link
In the Title field at the top, give the link a clear, internal name (e.g., "Q4 2024 Ebook Download Link"). This helps you identify it later in your Pretty Links list.
3. Finalizing and Tracking
- Publish: Click the blue Publish button on the right side of the screen.
Your new vanity URL or redirect is now active! Test the new link (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/ebook ) to ensure it sends you to the correct target URL.
